The Marshall-Spreiers are a family of breakouts with a passion for singing and a true love of the performing arts. A single mother of nine, Jane Marshall braved a courageous battle with breast cancer 2 years ago. During her recovery, a faulty dryer vent resulted in a fire that ravaged the family home. The house was left uninhabitable and Jane was forced to use her insurance money to seek out alternative living arrangements. Now the money has run out and they are doing everything they can to stay positive despite half the family living in a one-bedroom cottage and the other half living in a friend’s motor home. When Jane discovered she had cancer, the eight children living at the broken down home became warriors in their own right. Her 18-year-old son stepped up to the plate and challenged himself to hold his family together. At the time, Noah realized he would need to put his education on hold until his mother finished out her treatments. Sophie (18), Ruth Anne (17), Daniel (15), Elizabeth (14), Elijah (12), Isabelle (9), and Kate (9) have all had to grow up fast, but they still remain positive and strive to achieve their dreams. Even during these difficult times, Jane tries to lead by example. She encourages the children to laugh, play and not give up on life. As a family they also celebrate the human spirit by finding ways to give back to the community (anonymously). While the Hurston family was on a charitable relief effort, a pipe burst in an upstairs bathroom, destroying much of their home and personal belongings due to the extensive, undetected flooding. With little money from the insurance company to repair water damage, the Hurstons have been essentially homeless for now over a year. Yet, the Hurston’s desire to help others has not changed because of their misfortune. Joe’s piloting skills and Cindy’s nursing skills have helped others during twenty-five years of international relief work. They have instilled in their children the joy and reward of helping others in the local, national and global communities. As a result, the Hurston family truly works together, sacrificing personal time, comfort and safety, to lend a helping hand to local, national and global communities in numerous charitable missions. Juliet, their oldest daughter, rallies her friends to get involved in many of the community projects she spearheads as well. Their passion is to “provide clean water to a thirsty world.” To support that effort, the Hurstons established “AirMobile Disaster Relief,” a 501(c) (3) non-profit business. Through donations, they manufacture the “Voyager,” a portable water purifier. To support their family, Joe has a toner cartridge refilling company, and Cindy has a small cafeĢ. The Hurstons recognize the importance of clean water for healthy and successful survival of a culture. A mission dear to their heart is delivering and installing …
Trisha Urban suffered a terrible tragedy with the untimely death of her husband. Now, Trisha and her one-year-old daughter have an opportunity to turn the page on their past and write a new chapter built on a foundation of joy, innocence and whimsy. By drawing upon classic fairy tales and rhymes, the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition design team plan to design the dream home that Trisha and her late husband, Andy, once hoped for. Trisha and Andy met back in college while working an internship at a youth group home. Andy was the youth counselor and Trisha was the cook. It didn’t take long for them to realize that they were meant to be together. Andy worked as a mental health therapist for teens at a local shelter known as the Opportunity House, which provides mental health care for those who cannot afford it. The young couple was expecting their first child and in the process of turning their five-acre plot of land into their idyllic and beautiful dream home. On February 4, 2009, everything changed. Andy died suddenly of a heart attack while Trisha was in labor. She found Andy, who was born with a congenital heart defect, lying dead in the snow at their front gate. Trisha refuses to let Andy’s death be in vain. Since his passing, she has raised thousands of dollars for the American Heart Association. In addition, she has taken on a second job as a hospice nurse using her real life experience to help families cope during their difficult time. The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition …

The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team, hundreds of local volunteers, countertop surface provider Silestone, and countertop installer Old Castle Surfaces, built a safe, new home for the Lighthouse Christian School. At the center of the disaster is the Sweatt family, who has been running the school since 2003. In spite of the damage to eight of its 18 buildings on the school campus, the Sweatt family demonstrated true Tennessee volunteerism and took it upon themselves to spearhead a flood recovery effort. They have helped more than 200 families, providing shelter, food, water, clothing, counseling, and a myriad of other social and financial services. Located at 5100 Blue Hole Road in Antioch, the preschool is the lifeblood of the Lighthouse School. With finances nearly depleted, Lighthouse School does not have the resources to find skilled labor to rebuild. Sadly, if the building isn’t rebuilt and reopened soon, the entire school is in jeopardy of closing within 24 months. After the flooding, the Sweatt family and the school stepped in immediately to help Nashville recover. “The Sweatt family and the Lighthouse Christian School stepped in to help Nashville recover. It’s fitting that the community and volunteers have stepped in to help them now,” explained Lorenzo Marquez, vice president of marketing for Cosentino North America, which has its headquarters in Stafford, Texas. Cosentino is a leader in natural stone and the world’s largest producer of quartz surfacing …

OSD is a boarding school for deaf children. It was established in 1870 to provide free education for deaf kids, and is one of Oregon’s oldest state-operated programs. OSD is owned and funded by the State of Oregon, and is the only deaf school in the state. It also houses Oregon’s largest collection of state history in its museum. Deaf children come to live at the school to learn American Sign Language and life skills, as well as for their standard education. It’s an immersive environment. The spirit of the school bears resemblance to the Harry Potter stories — it’s a boarding school for special kids (like Hogwarts), where the students become like siblings and the teachers become like parents to them. OSD is truly a second home to the students. It’s hard for a deaf child to excel in a hearing school, because they are isolated and viewed as handicapped. There are minimal deaf services available in typical schools. Providing sign language interpreters is not enough. At OSD, deaf kids are “normal” — they are in a signing community where they can communicate with everyone around them, they have camaraderie, deaf role models, and develop a sense that they can do anything. There are 1200 deaf children in the state of Oregon, and OSD has room to take on at least 100 more kids. Each deaf child in the state is assigned an Individual Education Plan team to discuss services for equal access to education, and the best educational plan for the child. Parents are part of that team …
Rhex is a hometown hero who has distinguished himself by locally leading the movement to banish the childhood obesity epidemic. In 2004, he created “Move to the Groove;” a dance program designed to get both teachers and students on their feet and in shape. Rhex’s award-winning dance program is currently being utilized in 3 elementary schools where health and wellness has been emphasized as a priority. Ironically his own family currently resides in a 70-year-old home that has become a health hazard. Rhex Arboleda and his wife Claire came to America 8 years ago from the Philippines to pursue the American Dream. In an effort to show his appreciation to the country that provided him a better opportunity, he has committed his life to teaching. With five energetic kids ranging from 2-10, the Arboleda house is always bubbling over with excitement. Despite outgrowing their modest 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom home, the children, like their dad, share an appreciation of the arts. CJ (10), Clarenx (8), Calix (6), Cullen (4), and Rhex Jr (2) frequently break into song and still continue to brim with joy and humor. The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team, hundreds of local volunteers, local builder Lexington Homes, Inc., countertop surface provider Silestone, countertop fabricator and installer AMC of Wisconsin, built a safe, new home for the Arboleda family. “Cosentino is happy to be a part of this Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project to build a safer, stronger home that will protect and …
